With acclamations aplenty (including The Age Music Victoria Best Indigenous Act, and a Deadly Awards nomination for Band of the Year), The Deans are the soundtrack of modern Australia, where original soul sounds meet cool rock influences. Having twice recorded at Commonground, we are honoured to host this 7-piece. How could you resist the “United Nations of Indigenous and immigrant Australians unified in the one Soul groove”?

Don’t dance?  Well you do now! Blending influences from 1970s Nigerian Afrobeat with street Funk, The Seven Ups are a true party band - and that, friends, is why they’re playing Commonground Festival!

Little Wise is Melbournian songwriter Sophie Klein. This artist is small in stature, but tells a towering story with the wisdom of an old soul. We love her melodies and easy-listening, yet raw and uplifting, music. Her debut LP was made possible by a devoted audience of crowdfunders, hooked on her songwriting.  We hope you like it as much as we do.

Frank Yamma is a traditional Pitjantjatjara man from the Central Desert and speaks five languages. An extraordinary songwriter and an exceptional guitarist, with an incredibly rich voice.  One of Australia’s most important Indigenous Songwriters, Yamma’s brutally honest tales of alcohol abuse, cultural degradation, respect for the old law and the importance of country are spine tingling. We’re completely honoured to host Frank Yamma and look forward to a very special set.

We searched long and hard for this performer and found her.  A solo artist for many years, and this year beginning collaborations, Harmony’s soundscapes of euphoria really need to be heard.  Possibly the “love child of Jeff Buckley and Joni Mitchell”, Harmony Byrne will make you believe in the power of raw, honest, creative expression.
